Finding Daily Joy

Updated: Feb 16, 2022

I have spent my life looking for happiness.

On the eve of my 45th birthday, I have come to accept that you have to create your own happiness and joy. Being happy is a choice. Being happy is brave.

How do I find my joy? In a world that has stigma on mental health issues, finding your joy can be difficult, as it sometimes looks a little crazy. If more people embraced their inner weirdo, stopped trying to be ‘normal’, the world would be a happier place.

Here are some ideas that have helped me find my joy. I share in the hopes that it helps you feel joy.

Do something that makes you laugh.

My latest thing is playing the harmonica. I am terrible but it makes me giggle. Find something that makes you giggle.

Stop caring what other people think.

I think this comes with age and experience. I still struggle with it but it gets better every year.

Don’t compare yourself to other people.

It took me a long time to get the hang of this one, as I am unmarried, no kids, etc… but those things don’t guarantee happiness. Those choices didn't work for me and my life. I had to make choices that made me content. The only person you are in competition with is yourself.

Do something kind for someone else.

Sometimes you need to get away from yourself and help out a friend or volunteer. I find great joy in volunteering to help out my favorite non profits.

I hope this helps you find a little joy in your life. Be brave. Be weird. Be happy.
